JUNE 2010

It hardly seems appropriate to continue further, but life must go on, and we that are left must go on living so...

STRACEY – . We’ve continued our best ever run in this competition with a good win over Southwick park, ( winners for the last 2 years ) 77 – 65 and 8 pts. Followed by an even better 10 point win v Field Place men 93 – 65 and then gained another 8 point win over Homefield park 93 – 59. Keep it going chaps we’re in a position to win this.

BRODIE – . We have won this comp for the last 2 years, but, seem to be dropping off the scale this year with 2 defeats; v Field Place men 54 – 75 and 0 points. V Homefield park 40 – 66 and 4 points.

WEST TARRING CUP – a wonderful start v Marine Gardens, a full12 pts and

104 – 64 scoreline. Followed by a good 8 point win over Field place men 98 – 66, with just 2 games left we look favourites to win this cup again.

MARINE GARDEN CUP –  a v.good start with 103 – 91 win at Marine Gardens and 10 points. And another 10 points from the match with Field place men 106 – 86.

L.G.L.  An excellent full 10 points and 81 – 61 scoreline v Field Place Men. Followed by a disappointing defeat by Worthing Pavilion B, who it is reported used their A team to gain a  99 – 78 win, we got 4 points.

The BRISTOW continues to be well attended: 24 on the last Thursday of the month and what a great and fun time was had by all.

THE ABERGAVENNY CUP.

The least said about this the better. We came up against Chichester: top of LGL div 1, and we lost, no surprise there then.

FRIENDLIES. A surprise win v Chichester 75 – 68. Followed by another v Arundel 103 – 83. Then a loss at Pulborough 62 – 76. Then a win over West Dean 70 – 62, followed by a loss v Southwick 72 – 75.

Text Box: THE SAD NEWS - Most of you will know by now that Dai Jones died at 3:30am on Monday 28th June. Dai, is / was loved and respected by all, his loss will hurt those who knew him as their lives will never be the same. He used to play for Field Place men and then joined West Tarring in 1991. Dai won just about everything there is to win, every cup we have bears his name somewhere. He was club champion in 1994, Vice Captain in 1998 and ran the club pairs and Bristow competitions for many years. A perfect lead he played for the county, taking on the great bowlers and winning. He graced West Tarring bowls club with his time, his life and his best endeavours. When members spoke of him they were in awe of his determination, his skill, and especially when in the 1990s he had a stroke and lost the use of his right arm so he taught himself to bowl with his left arm so that he could continue to play this noble art of a game for us. His last competition victories came in 2005 when he won both pairs competitions: the 2 wood and handicapped pairs. The latter being against myself and John Betts-Allen, a game that haunts me to this day. His last cup victory was the West Tarring Cup win of 2006 v Marine Gardens. For 16 years he was West Tarring’s stalwart, then medical complications arose in 2007 and consigned to hospitals and nursing he could no longer bowl. He was sometimes seen after that in a wheelchair on the rink side supporting the club, progressively looking frailer, until the one certainty in life that we all must face at some time in the future overtook him, a blessed release from the pain he went through for those last 3 years. Let us pray that if bowls is a heaven for Dai, he has at last found the perfect rink.
